Types of AI : Rule-based & Learning-based systems

    If I give a computer 1000 photos of cats and dogs,
    how can it learn to recognize which one is a cat?

    Imagine the task:

    You want to teach a computer to recognize cats in pictures.

    Now let’s see how each type of AI handles it


    1️ Rule-Based AI — “If-Then Logic”

    “In old AI, the computer didn’t learn.
    Humans had to write down every rule to tell the computer what a cat looks like.”

    Example rules:

    IF has fur = yes 

    AND has four legs = yes 

    AND has pointed ears = yes 

    AND has whiskers = yes 

    THEN it’s a cat

     But if the photo shows:

    • A cat hiding (no visible legs)
    • Or a dog with similar ears
      → The system gets confused

    “Rule-based AI works only for things we can describe exactly.
    If something looks different, it fails.”

     Key point:
    Rules are written by humans, not learned.


     2️ Machine Learning — “Learns from examples”

    Now we don’t write rules — we show the computer many cat and dog pictures,
    and it learns patterns by itself.

    You give it:

    • 1000 cat photos
    • 1000 dog photos

    Each image is labelled (“Cat” or “Dog”).

    The computer measures features like:

    • Size of ears
    • Shape of face
    • Color of fur
    • Eye position

    Then it finds a pattern that separates cats from dogs.
    Next time you show a new photo, it predicts:

    “Hmm… this looks 80% like a cat .”

    “Machine Learning is like a student who studies many examples and finds patterns —
    we don’t tell it the rules, it figures them out.”

     Key point:
    Computer learns from data, but humans still choose what features to measure.


     3️ Deep Learning — “Learns features automatically”

    “Deep Learning is smarter — we don’t even tell it what features to look for!
    It looks at the raw image and learns everything by itself.”

     Example:
    You give the neural network cat and dog images.
    It has many layers (like a brain):

    • 1st layer learns edges (lines, curves)
    • 2nd layer learns shapes (ears, nose, eyes)
    • 3rd layer learns whole faces
    • Output layer says “Cat” or “Dog”

    It learns on its own, from raw pixels (no human help picking features).

    “Deep Learning is like a child who looks at thousands of cat photos and just knows what a cat looks like — even if it’s a cartoon or drawn in sand!”

     Key point:
    Computer automatically learns features and becomes very accurate —
    but it needs lots of data and high computing power (like GPUs).

    Let’s see how Machine Learning and Deep Learning do this differently.

    Machine Learning Example: “Cat Classifier”

    We (humans) extract features first.

    We’ll write a program that looks for features like —

    • Has whiskers?
    • Has pointed ears?
    • Has fur?
    • Has sharp eyes?
    • Has four legs?”

    Then we give this information as numbers (0 or 1):

    whiskers=1, fur=1, pointed_ears=1, sharp_eyes=1 → Cat

    whiskers=0, fur=0, pointed_ears=0, sharp_eyes=0 → Dog

    The Machine Learning model (say, a Decision Tree or SVM) then learns rules from these examples.

    How it learns:
    “If fur=1 and whiskers=1 and ears=pointed → probably Cat.”

    So in ML, we do:

    Features + Labels → Model → Prediction

    Deep Learning Example: “Cat Classifier”

    In Deep Learning, we don’t tell the computer what to look for —
    it learns the features on its own!

    We feed raw images (pixels) directly — no manual feature extraction.

    The neural network automatically learns:

    • 1st layer: detects edges and lines
    • 2nd layer: detects shapes (ears, eyes, mouth)
    • 3rd layer: detects full cat faces
    • Output layer: says “Cat” or “Not Cat”

    It builds its own understanding, layer by layer.

    So in DL, we do:

    Images → Neural Network → Prediction

     Machine Learning:

    Photo → Extract features manually → ML Algorithm → “Cat”

     Deep Learning:

    Photo → Neural Network (many layers) → Automatically learns features → “Cat”

    The Key Difference Between

    but about who discovers and decides the rules.


     Think of it like teaching a computer what a cat is


    1️Rule-Based AI — You write the rules manually

    “A cat has whiskers, pointy ears, and fur.
    If all three are present → call it a cat.”

     Here:

    • You decide which features to check
    • You decide how to combine them (the logic)

    IF has_whiskers = yes

    AND has_fur = yes

    AND has_pointy_ears = yes

    THEN animal = cat

     Key idea:
    The computer does not learn anything — it only follows what you tell it.
    If you forget a rule (like “sometimes cats don’t have visible tails”), it fails.

     Rules = Written by humans
     No learning happens.


     2️ Machine Learning — Computer learns the rules from data

     You still decide which features to look at,
    but you don’t write the rules anymore.

    “Here are 1000 animals.
    For each one, I’ve measured: ear size, whisker length, fur color, etc.
    Please learn what combination of these means ‘cat.’”

    The machine (like a Decision Tree) finds patterns like:

    “If whisker_length > 5 and fur_color = brown → probably a cat.”

     So:

    • Humans choose what to measure (features)
    • The computer learns how to use them (rules/patterns)

    ✅ Features = Chosen by humans
    ✅ Rules = Learned by machine


     3️ Deep Learning — Computer learns both features AND rules

    “Here are thousands of cat and dog photos — no measurements, no features.
    Just learn directly from the pictures.”

    The neural network automatically learns:

    • Low-level features: edges, lines
    • Mid-level features: ears, eyes, nose
    • High-level patterns: “cat face”

    It figures out both what to look for and how to decide.
